Top 5 Skin Care Trends for Spring 2022

Are you ready to get your spring skin blooming? Winter is fading and we are tip toeing into warmer months. This can be a great opportunity to give our routine a revamp. Trends may come and go, but skin care isn’t just a fad. Let’s see what’s worth a try, and what is all hype.

#1 - Niacinamide

Niacinamide isn’t a new ingredient, but it is finally getting the attention it deserves. In fact, niacinamide is EVERYWHERE right now and may be in more products that you realize, but is it here to stay?

Niacinamide is Vitamin B3 and it pairs well with most of your skin care, day and night, and offers a range of benefits including improving the appearance of redness, discoloration & dark spots, balancing oil production, and visibly reducing the look of pores. It is barrier supportive, balancing, and brightening.

Niacinamide

Is it a trend worth trying?

Yes! If you struggle with any of these concerns listed above or if you use active ingredients like retinol or chemical exfoliants, like glycolic acid or salycilic acid, you need this in your routine. Niacinamide still needs to be included at meaningful and clinically proven levels to deliver the most visible results, but even smaller quantities can offer benefits.  goPure products that contain Niacinamide:

My Take: I have been recommending niacinamide for over a decade and I am so happy to see it so readily available in products. I love the 10% Niacinamide Booster for the most targeted treatment. Also, watch my Instagram Live recap video about what Nicacinamide can do for your skin

#2 - Slugging

Slugging is nothing new, but it seems to be all over social media right now. “Slugging” is a term used to describe the layering of an occlusive product, typically petroleum jelly, on top of the skin as a last step in your evening routine. The technique is used to lock in hydration and seal the skin barrier. This technique isn’t new, but it is definitely trending.

Is it a trend worth trying?

It depends. Some people swear by this trend and claim that it has totally transformed their skin, leaving it supple and clear. If you have sensitive skin, combination/oily skin, or are prone to milia or breakouts it is probably a trend to skip. You also need to be cautious about slugging over powerful retinoids as it can potentially increase the likelihood of irritation.

My take: I much prefer using oils, like Argan Oil, to bolster my skin barrier as a final step as an alternative to occlusive slugging with products heavy in petroleum jelly.

#3 - Skin Care Supplements

As skin care evolves, so is our understanding of how multi-faceted our skin care products can be. Skin care doesn’t just have to be what we put on our skin, but what we intake as well. Supplements aren’t only trending in skin care, but they are the next horizon of how we approach holistic skin wellness. Our skin is an organ, our largest organ in fact, and our skin goals can now be achieved with an inside-out approach.

CeramaFirm Supplements

Is it a trend worth trying?

That’s a personal call, however I think it is a go. Make sure you are getting products from a reputable company and understand that this is just one part of well rounded nutrition and a consistent skin care routine.

My Take: Supplements like the CeramaFirm Dermal Lifting & Tightening Complex, that include collagen, hyaluronic acid, a range of vitamins and antioxidants, as well as targeted skin-boosting nutrients (Ceramosides) are the next generation of products that can elevate our routine and amplify results.

#4 - Science-proven, Smarter Products

Skin care ingredients are getting better and “smarter” and trends are pushing towards scientifically proven products and ingredients. What is smarter skincare? These are ingredients that work better with less potential for irritation. Retinol in ‘smarter’ forms, like the granactive retinol found in the Actives Firm & Lift Serum, are easier for our skin to tolerate and deliver even better results faster than traditional retinol.

Hyaluronic Acid is another ingredient that is showing up in our products in ‘smarter’ forms. Traditional Hyaluronic Acid is a large molecule and can struggle to penetrate deeply into the skin and sits on or near the surface of our skin. Products like the Actives Hydrate & Smooth Serum are formulated to include versions of Hyaluronic Acid with smaller molecules like sodium hyaluronate, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, and botanical alternatives like tamarind, aka Sulomoist, to offer deeper absorption and still deliver powerful hydration.

Clinical studies like these are how we really know these ingredients deliver better results.

  • Skin Firmness (appearance of): improved by 64.7% in 4 weeks, with 100% of participants experiencing an improvement.

  • Wrinkles and Fine Lines (appearance of): improved by 31.4% after 6 weeks of use with 97% of participants experiencing significant improvement.

  • Skin Elasticity (appearance of): improved by 7.4% by week 6 with 82% of participants experiencing significant improvement.

        • Evaluations of 20 people who used Solumoist compared to Hyaluronic Acid found that Solumoist was 59.2% more effective at hydrating the look of skin.

Is it a trend worth trying?

100% Yes! Skin care really is evolving. You can’t go wrong using products with smarter ingredients backed by clinical studies.

My Take: I love science-backed skincare and moving forward, it’s a non-negotiable. That’s smart skin care! Yes, please!

#5 - Body care with Active Ingredients

Body care products are getting a makeover and moving past what we’re used to seeing on drugstore shelves. You can get full body anti-aging skin care, and quality targeted products for multiple concerns, from dark spots, sagging skin, breakouts, and crepiness.

Skin thickness and skin vulnerability differs around the body. This means our skin has different needs and challenges in different places. Skin damage and aging happens all over the body, especially anywhere exposed to and not properly protected from the sun. One area in particular is the neck and chest.

The neck and chest is a very delicate, vulnerable area that shows the visible sign of aging somewhat dramatically. Neck products, like the Actives Tighten & Lift Neck Cream, go beyond regular moisturizers to deliver clinically-proven levels of ingredients like peptides and proprietary botanical blends to improve the look of sagging skin, crepiness, and discoloration common to this area.

        Tighten & Lift Neck Cream

Is it a trend worth trying?

It’s a go, but be patient and consistent with body care, and especially the neck area. Use your serums on your neck and hands too for more complete care, and understand that this damage didn’t happen overnight, so results take time and consistent care day and night.

My take: I have long touted that skin care doesn’t stop at the jawline and in all of my years as an esthetician, this is the top regret I hear from my clients. They wished they would have cared for this delicate skin better. The best day to start this as a part of your routine is today.
