Skincare Tips for Every Decade

As an esthetician, one of the biggest issues I see standing in the way of skincare success is not using the proper products that meet our skin’s needs when it needs it. Our skin has different needs for various concerns, seasons, and of course, ages. Today, we’ll dive in by decade, from your 30s to your 60s and beyond, so you can find the right products to get your best skin at every age!

Skincare in Your 30s

This decade is all about protection and prevention. In our 30s, we start to notice meaningful changes in the skin. The loss of collagen that started slowly in our 20s can start to pop up in the form of fine lines. In fact, by the time we’re in our 30s, we have lost about 40% of the ceramides in our skin’s protective lipid barrier. We’re also losing 1% of our collagen yearly. Sun damage and dark spots can start to surface, while breakouts can continue to cause irritation and hyperpigmentation.

Your recommended routine:

• Battling breakouts? Try exfoliating (AHAs and BHAs 1-3x a week) to help keep pores clear and reduce the look of inflammation. Niacinamide can also help with oil management, breakouts, and barrier protection — plus, it plays well with other products in your routine.

• If you aren’t already using antioxidants and vitamin c in your daily routine, it’s time to start. Stay consistent and pair it with SPF during the day. This will help even the look of dark spots and sun damage, while revealing a bright-looking glow. Here's what you need to know about Vitamin C skincare.

• Add retinol, but start low and slow to see how your skin reacts. Using a cream or serum just a few times a week can help to reveal a smoother-looking complexion and reduce the look of those faint fine lines. It’ll also work to support your natural collagen loss for a plumper appearance. goPure uses a highly stable yet gentle form called granactive retinoid, which works well even on sensitive skin.

Consistency is queen during this decade! Elevate your routine with high-quality antioxidants during the day and potent clinical active ingredients at night. Years of sun damage begin to become more dramatic. This can lead to age spots, more fine lines, and deeper wrinkles. In our 40s, we are losing about 1% of the collagen in our skin each year — and we may have lost up to 60% of the ceramides in our skin's protective lipid barrier. As the loss of collagen continues, the signs of aging can become more apparent. Not only is your face impacted, but you’ll also start to notice changes in the eye area, as well as on your neck and décolleté.

Your recommended routine:

• Exfoliate consistently, but in moderation. Opt for AHAs twice weekly to support collagen production. This will also help to slough away dead skin cells for a smoother-looking complexion.

• Get serious about serums day and night. Using more potent retinol regularly at night, especially if you didn’t start in your 30s, will help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Adding a hyaluronic acid into your antioxidant day routine will give the skin a boost of hydration for a more supple look, too. Find out more about the importance of keeping skin hydrated

• Hyper focus on ingredients that further support your natural lipid barrier, like peptides, fatty acids, and ceramides. This will elevate your routine and help your skin look and feel its best.

• Use products targeted to treat delicate, thinning areas like the eyes and neck

Bonus Tip: Keep up your Vitamin C Serum and SPF for day! It’s always an important part of your routine.

Skincare in Your 50s

The average age for the onset of menopause in the U.S. is 51. Menopause causes major changes in our skin, including:

Significant collagen loss (30-40%)
Loss of subcutaneous fat
Loss of elasticity
Hormonally triggered changes in our oil production.

Your recommended routine:

• Keep your cleansing and exfoliation routines gentle. Avoid things that may strip your skin’s natural lipid barrier and make the skin more dry. Stay away from ingredients like SLS in cleansers, alcohol in toners, using hot water in your cleansing routine, and over-exfoliating.

Bonus Tip: Keep up your retinol use. If you feel your skin becoming more dry with hormonal changes, try a retinol cream or work down to less days a week. Make sure you top your retinol with a good moisturizer to keep the skin feeling hydrated. Check out Stephanie's Retinol Sandwich tutorial here!

• Continuing with targeted skincare for your specific concerns will help you get the most out of your routine. If you haven’t started using them, now is an ideal time! For example, adding in products specifically for the neck and eye areas if that is an area of concern. You can also try more targeted treatments for dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

• Hydration and moisture are key to combating the look of increased dryness, fine lines, and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid and other humectants will help with hydration, and a go-to moisturizer with ceramides, richer emollients, and peptides will help support moisturization and barrier function. Bonus: Peptides may also support natural collagen synthesis and improve the look of skin firmness. Discover your new favorite dream cream here!

Skincare in Your 60s+

In our 60s and beyond, our cell turnover and collagen synthesis are significantly impacted. During this decade, our skin is thinner and heals much more slowly. Skin barrier performance is reduced, and you may notice that skin tends to dry out and become rough. Some blotchiness and hyperpigmentation may appear, so you’ll need a routine that nourishes, replenishes, and protects.

• Opt for skin oils! If you haven’t already tried them, these multi-tasking oils offer an array of benefits and are gentle on the skin. They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and antiinflammatory properties as they deeply nourish the look of dry skin. Ceramides and peptides are a great support to barrier function with your moisturizers and oils, too! Get facial oil tips here!

• Continue to support your skin with daily antioxidant use in a good vitamin C serum. Don’t skip serums with hyaluronic acid, as they work to hydrate the appearance of skin. These will target multiple skin concerns from lines and wrinkles to hyperpigmentation. They can also support you in your skincare journey by helping to prevent further damage (and visibly improve the look of existing damage).

• Use active ingredients regularly! Understand that timelines can be longer for results in the appearance of more significant concerns, but you absolutely can get great results at any age with consistent use.

At any age, it’s important to note that the leading cause of skin damage is not from natural aging, but from UV radiation and sun damage. In fact, up to 90% of damage we see is from UV exposure. Be sure to use SPF and antioxidants to support your healthy skincare journey at every age. No matter your decade, goPure is here to help make you feel confident and empowered in your own beautiful skin!

I’m 55 and am out in the sun all day in the summer. My concern is it’s hard to use retinol even though I wear a big hat and sunglasses and try to stay covered up and always use sunblock. My chin and mouth end up getting burned so I stopped using retinol. What else can I do to keep from getting wrinkles and creepy skin? Thank you

Hi Debby,

Thank you for your question! As we all know, Retinol will make your skin more sensitive to the sun so we suggest to not use any Retinol products 2 days before and after you lay in the sun. If you are mostly out in the sun, we recommend using the Hydrate & Smooth Serum and Anti Wrinkle Cream in place of the Retinol products at night. Also, it is equally important to apply sunscreen during the day, and re-apply every 2 hours if possible to keep you protected from the harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun.

Our Esthetician Stephanie came up with a blog with a list of sunscreen products we recommend you use with goPure products: https://gopurebeauty.com/blogs/news/sun-care-is-healthcare

Thank you, Maya gopure beauty

Hello Linda,

We get asked a ton about SPF in our products. Unfortunately at this time, our products do not contain SPF but this is something we hope to have in the future. We are not sure how long until our products contain SPF but we know that this is very important to our customers and something that is in the works!

I’m in my 70s, so I don’t know which products are best for me. Also, since I’m in a fixed income, price is of great concern. I like my eye cream, but I have problems with my eyes. That makes it difficult to be consistent.
