How To Care for Skin During & After Menopause

October 18, 2022 | BY Stephanie Allen Klasse

The changes menopause brings happen as we are already experiencing and noticing the natural aging process. Because of this, skin appears to have aged more rapidly. Here are just a few common effects menopause may have on the skin and how to lessen its effects.

Common Menopause Skin Changes

Menopause can cause skin to appear less plump, leading to a dramatic increase in the appearance of lines and wrinkles, as well as, crepey-looking skin.

The hormone changes that happen during menopause also can cause our complexions to look and feel more dry, rough, dehydrated, and uneven.

Additionally, the cumulative impact of lifestyle factors such as excess sun exposure, smoking, poor nutrition, lack of proper sleep, and high stress has had on the skin will be more evident.

Supportive Skincare Routine for Menopausal Skin

1. Gentle Cleansing & Exfoliating
Avoid things that may strip the skin, causing it to appear more dry. SLS in cleansers, alcohol in toners, harsh makeup removers, over-exfoliating, and using hot water in your cleansing routine can all contribute to the look of dry, dehydrated skin.

Our Cleanser & Toner are free from harsh, harmful surfactants and they both contain ingredients, like Rosehip Oil and other antioxidants, that help skin appear brighter-looking and more nourished.

2. Target & Boost
Use targeted skin care products that are specifically formulated for thin, delicate areas of the skin like the eye, neck, and décolleté. These areas will show the impact of aging sooner and changes in these areas may also look more evident. If you haven’t started using targeted eye care and neck creams, now is an ideal time.

3. Brighten & Refine
Reach for skincare with ingredients that can help reduce the look of dull, uneven skin. This includes Vitamin C for your daytime routine and Retinol and Retinoids at night. Get your day & night routine guide now!

Bonus Tip: If you feel your skin becoming excessively dry with hormone changes, try our Retinol Cream or try the retinol sandwich method. You can also use retinol fewer days a week. Make sure you top your retinol with a good moisturizer.

4. Hydrate & Moisturize
Add in products that help to visibly hydrate and moisturize the appearance of the skin. This can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic Acid can hold 1000x its weight in water and can help with the look of skin hydration. Our Hydrate and Smooth Serum features 3 forms of hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate & visibly plump the look of skin.

Your go-to moisturizer should contain ingredients like ceramides, emollients, and peptides to help reveal a more radiant and youthful appearance. Our Anti Wrinkle Moisturizer is nourishing, lightweight, fast absorbing, and just what you need for deeply hydrating the look of mature skin.

Our 10% Niacinamide Booster features Pentavitin®, an ingredient that helps skin retain moisture, helping skin to appear more plump & hydrated.

Adding in a facial oil can lock in moisture and dramatically improve the look and feel of skin dryness.

Remember, it's always important to pay attention to your skin and always follow the guidance of your trusted physician. Want more tips for mature skin? Check out our Stephanie's tips on TikTok here!
