Changing your routine from Summer to Fall
Change is in the air! As the weather cools and the seasons change, it can have an impact on our skin. There are some easy but essential adjustments we can make to our skincare routine to ensure our skin stays happy.
Cooler weather can mean less humidity in the air, heaters in our home can further dry the air and our skin, and while we may be getting less sun, it’s important to not skip the SPF. This is also a good time to assess the active ingredients in our routine and how they are working with our skin and adjust accordingly. Barrier protection, hydration, and moisturization are key to happy skin in the fall and into winter. Let’s see what we need to swap and what we need to restock and replenish.
Concerns to be aware of as summer ends and fall begins:
Texture - An increase in rough and uneven texture is likely at the end of the summer. This can increase moving into colder months as the air dries.
Pore Size and Congestion - Larger pore size and pore congestion is common at the end of the summer.
Breakouts - Some skin types battle more breakouts in the warmer months, but some skin types can break out as drier, cooler air moves in and impacts the skin barrier.
Dryness & Dehydration - Exposure to more sun and the elements can lead to oil imbalances in the skin. As the weather becomes unpredictable in the fall, skin can become increasingly imbalanced, dry, and dehydrated.
Oiliness - When our skin becomes dehydrated from the changing weather it can stimulate oil production to compensate. Combination skin is very prone to changes from oiliness to dryness with seasonal changes.
Dark Spots & Hyperpigmentation - Heat and an increase in sun exposure can lead to a worsening of visible dark spots, melasma, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. In the fall we may be faced with much more uneven skin as a result of the summer months.
Uneven Skin - Heat and sun exposure can lead to changes in our general skin tone & texture. Skin can look blotchy and feel rough and look dull. Sunburns, heat, and skin damage can lead to an increase in redness in the skin and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Increased Fine Lines and Wrinkles - UV radiation damages the collagen and elastin in our skin leading to an increase in fine lines and wrinkles. Dehydration and dryness increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Cleanse and Balance
Cleansing is an essential skincare step. Gently cleansed skin preps for all of the goodness of your routine. Follow cleansing with a toner that will balance the skin’s pH and give it an extra dose of hydration.
Pro Tip: Avoid showering and cleansing your skin with hot water. Hot water can strip the skin and lead to more dryness and dehydration.
Essential Serums
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant skincare ingredient that fights the visible impact of oxidative stress from UV exposure. Because we are exposed to UV rays year-round, the use of Vitamin C should not just be a summer go-to. It can help improve the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles, fade the look of dark spots, and reveal a more even skin tone and a brighter complexion. Antioxidants are important to integrate day and night, but really leaning into them during the day is essential.
Hydration
Dehydrated skin can look more irritated and blotchy and fine lines and wrinkles are also more visible. Because the changing seasons can additionally dehydrate the skin, using a hydration serum day and night is essential. The Dramatically Dewy Serum can be an ideal skin swap as cooler months roll in. It features 3 weights of hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump the look of skin, plus a Hibiscus Fruit Extract. This ingredient along with Vitamin B5 naturally supports our skin’s barrier and makes it a supercharged hydration and moisturization serum.
Retinol
We know that retinol is our nighttime skincare superstar, but we also know that sometimes it can make skin feel more dry. If the changing seasons are making your skin more sensitive or dry, try the retinol sandwich method. This works great from time to time, or all fall and winter to keep skin happy. Simply apply your Firm and Lift Serum AFTER your moisturizer instead of under it. Then you can top it with a bit more moisturizer or oil.
Moisturize
Is it time to level up your moisturization? In the fall and winter...typically yes. Using more emollient and rich moisturizers and oils can help protect our skin and reinforce our barrier. The use of peptides and ceramides in skin care helps restore our barrier and supports skin hydration. This will help keep your skin protected, hydrated, and happy through the changing seasons.Esthetician Note: If you are using active ingredients like pure Vitamin C, glycolic acid, and retinol it is extra important to make sure you’re using a proper moisturizer in the fall and winter when skin is prone to more dryness.
Additional Treatments
After summer skin can have a range of issues, so going beyond the basic serums can add synergy to our skincare routine. They feature concentrated and potent ingredients that target a specific skin concern.
The 30% Vitamin C Dry Oil is an elegant, multi-use skin treatment that works with your other skincare to fade the look of dark spots and skin discoloration, day or night. It is extremely versatile and you can use it as a spot treatment, apply it all over the face, and even mix it into your moisturizer for an extra glow.
Reach for the Niacinamide Booster if your skin is battling enlarged pores, excess oiliness & shine, or skin discoloration. It pairs easily in any order with your other serums day or night.
Refine it! 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is your go-to exfoliant for dull-looking skin that is battling blemishes, bumpy skin texture, and clogged pores. The Wake Up Radiant AHA Peel is your best choice for rough, uneven-looking skin that is showing visible signs of aging.
Delicate Skin Care- The thinner areas of your skin will be much more prone to the impact of seasonal changes. Areas like the eye and neck have very thin skin, but they can also produce less oil and are areas of movement. Fine lines can appear here first both with age AND seasonal impacts. The use of an eye cream and neck cream that are formulated with multiple ingredients that support those concerns, while not being too heavy for that thinner skin is essential.
SPF
We don’t only wear sunscreen to prevent sunburns. We need it to protect our skin from the impact of UVA and UVB rays all year long. Sun exposure is a contributing factor to several skin concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and dark spots. Make sure you’re not skipping the suncare this fall.
Keeping skin happy as the summer fades, when our dark spots don’t want to, is as easy as following your clean, effective goPure routine!
