It might be more than you think! Skin pros take a lot into consideration when making skincare recommendations because so many factors impact how our skin looks, feels and behaves. These can also impact how someone’s skin might respond to skincare products and ingredients.
Some top factors that can impact how you decide to build a skincare routine include skin type, skin concerns, age, climate, and lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress, sun exposure, and smoking. How many steps you’d like in your skincare routine, any allergies and sensitivities, skin conditions, and RX medications.
Skincare Basics: Cleanser, Moisturizer, and SPF
These are based largely on your skin type to start These are considered skincare essentials that everyone needs in their skincare routine. If you’re looking to keep your routine super simple, start here and don’t skip these steps.
Target Your Concerns with Serums, Exfoliants, Eye and Neck Creams
These are based on your skin concerns and take all of those other factors into consideration. These steps typically have concentrated levels of active ingredients that more specifically target different skin concerns and delicate and unique areas of the face and body. The products may change in your routine from day to night, and even different days of the week based on how many items you use each product.
The basic flow of a skincare routine is:
- CLEANSE
- TONE
- TREAT
- MOISTURIZE
- PROTECT
I’d like to give you another way to visualize how a skincare routine is designed. Here's how to think about a routine a bit differently:
- The WASH OFF Phase: Anything that is applied and then washed off. These are products like cleansers, makeup removers, and wash-off masks or exfoliants. Keep in mind that you may be using a skin treatment here that is washed off.
- The LEAVE ON TREATMENT Phase: These are products that remain on the skin and are the most active and potent products such as toner, serums, and targeted products.
- The MOISTURIZE & PROTECT Phase: These products lock in your active ingredients and help keep water in the skin while working to keep out external aggressors that can harm the skin such as moisturizer, oils, and sunscreen.
Let’s walk through a skincare routine:
CLEANSE: Cleansing is so important because it removes skin impurities and allows your skincare to absorb on a clean canvas. Choose your cleanser based on your skin type and if you need a product that more thoroughly removes makeup. Skin treatments, like serums and exfoliants, really level up your skincare results. If you want a super simple routine you can start with one serum. Ideally, I recommend at least a daytime serum and a nighttime serum. This allows you to give your skin better support and even more targeted results.

MOISTURIZER: Choose your moisturizer based on your skin type. Our skin type largely is based on how much oil our skin naturally produces, and the correct weight of moisturizer will keep our skin looking and feeling comfortable, supple, and hydrated.
PROTECT: Sunscreen is essential for everyone, all year long. Damage from UV exposure is the leading cause of the visible signs of aging. Even the simplest of routines need a daily sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30.
