Meet Ascorbic Acid: The Antioxidant Superstar Estheticians Swear By

You’ve probably heard the word “antioxidant” everywhere by now. But, what are they? And how can they amp up your skincare routine results for that goPure glow?

Let’s take a look at all things antioxidants — and spotlight the gold standard known as ascorbic acid.

What’s an antioxidant?

Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals in our bodies. They can be human-made or natural substances that work to support cell damage. In other words, they help our skin in the fight against the oxidative stress that causes the visible sign of aging from environmental aggressors like UV rays & pollution.

Everyday Antioxidants

These mighty molecules can be found in our own skin in the form of melanin, vitamin C, and more. When it comes to skincare, lots of ingredients have antioxidant properties.

But the real hero is ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C. It’s not just any old vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is the pure, potent form of this radiance-enhancing vitamin.

Remember, our bodies don’t naturally produce vitamin C. We have to get our daily dose through things like diet and topicals — like skincare (hello, Vitamin C Booster!).

What can ascorbic acid do for you?

Beyond the basics of supporting your skin in the fight against damage, ascorbic acid is proven to safely:

• Improve the visible signs of aging
• Fade the look of dark spots for a more even-looking complexion
• Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
• Firm the look of sagging skin
• Support the product of collagen for a healthy look
• Help fight the look of future skin damage
• Reveal a more radiant-looking glow

In fact, ascorbic acid has been proven to be one of the most potent and effective antioxidant ingredients when applied topically. It’s shown to absorb into the skin and reach the intended site,  delivering those visible results you want.

It’s important to know that there are actually multiple forms of vitamin C. It can be used as an umbrella term for the molecule. Often, people also use the term vitamin c when they mean ascorbic acid because it is PURE VITAMIN C. In other words, it’s the gold standard loved by estheticians everywhere.

But! This can cause a lot of confusion when we are talking about vitamin c in skincare. Let’s look at clinical vs. botanical forms:

Clinical Forms:
• Vitamin C derivatives that convert ascorbic acid in skin:
• THD Ascorbate
• Ascorbyl Glucoside
• Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
Pro Tip: look for the word 'ascorb' in the ingredient

Botanical Forms:
• Kakadu Plum
• Rosehip Seed Oil
• Pomegranate
• Hibiscus
• Pumpkin Seed Extract

The version that is in your skincare (and how much) really matters regarding results and skin compatibility. Additionally, how it’s manufactured, packaged, and stored makes a difference as well.

Here at goPure, we use multiple versions of vitamin c. They each have a unique benefit for your unique skin. We’re thrilled to add pure ascorbic acid to our vitamin C family of products so you can unlock a more confident complexion!

Your Radiance-Enhancing Routine

Adding a glow factor to your daily routine is simple. Here’s how to add ascorbic acid to your ritual — and the juicy details you need to know.

Who is it for: All skin types! However, sensitive and oily/breakout-prone skin should use it more sparingly to avoid potential irritation or issues. Be sure to patch test prior to adding it to your routine.

When to use it: Ascorbic acid is safe for daily use in your routine. Your morning routine is ideal thanks to its UV-fighting properties, but it can be used at night.

How to use it: Simply add 1-2 shakes of our Vitamin C Booster powder to your favorite water-based goPure serum or moisturizer in the palm of your hand. Mix well and apply to clean skin.

Wondering how to mix and match your goPure favorites with our ascorbic acid-powered Vitamin C Booster? Check out this blog on perfect pairings.

More Fun Ascorbic Acid Facts:

1. It’s the most abundant naturally occurring antioxidant in our skin
2. We need vitamin C to produce collagen
3. Vitamin C is required for the regeneration of vitamin E
4. It’s a tyrosinase inhibitor. Tyrosinase is the enzyme that triggers the melanin synthesis that forms dark spots

Thanks for your inquiry, Carol! You can mix the Vitamin C booster with any of our moisturizers except the Retinol cream. If you are using the Vitamin C moisturizer during the day, you can mix it with that. We have a lot of customers who experience results quickly and some customers don’t experience results for about 6-8 weeks.
