Have the dry, colder winter months left your skin feeling dull and dehydrated? Spring is an ideal time to assess our skin and skincare routine to see what we need to revamp for the warmer… or much hotter months.
Spring weather can be unpredictable. Our skin may be trying to adjust daily to the changing temperatures and moisture in the air, leaving our skin looking dull and feeling dehydrated. Our skin is also reacting to different environmental allergens and new seasonal stressors. A spring home facial is a fun way to treat our skin to a burst of hydration with skin-soothing treatments.
What is a humectant?
A humectant is an ingredient that binds to water and helps draw it onto and into the skin. Some humectants can also exfoliate and help “clear the path” for absorption. Humectants in skincare help improve the look of skin hydration and, as a result, can help diminish the look of lines and wrinkles and improve the appearance of redness, blotchiness, irritation, and overall skin tone.
Some of my favorite skin hydrating humectants:
• Aloe Vera: antipollution, anti-inflammatory, calming, soothing
• Glycerin: effective hydrator, barrier supportive, common in skincare
• AHAs (like Glycolic Acid): can exfoliate and clear the path for deeper hydration
• Hyaluronic Acid: Bind to 1000x its weight in water, various molecule sizes, botanical and clinical forms
• Pentavitin: plant-based, helps retain moisture for up to 72 hours, leaves skin looking supple
Esthetician Tip: Because humectants draw water to them from inside and outside of the skin, applying them on damp skin is ideal, and it is important to lock in the hydration with a good moisturizer. You can spritz water on the skin in between layers of skincare if you want to give your humectants a boost.
Let’s get Glowing!
This facial treatment features products rich in humectants and can help reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, large pores, dull, uneven skin, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation. Because this routine uses glycolic acid as an option, it is best done in the evening or on a day without direct sun exposure.
Makeup Removal
What You'll Need: goPure Headband and Micellar Makeup Remover Wipes
A good facial starts with clean skin. Before we cleanse, it is important to remove any makeup. This step can also remove excess impurities so the ingredients in your cleanser can work on an even deeper level.
Gently wipe the humectant-rich Micellar Makeup Remover Wipes over the eyes and face, avoiding tugging or pulling the skin. Simply discard the biodegradable wipe.
Cleanse
What You'll Need: Vitamin C Cleanser & a Clean Towel
Dampen the face with warm water, and place a nickel-sized amount of the Vitamin C Cleanser in your palm. Lather the cleanser lightly and apply it to the face. Massage onto the skin, avoiding the eye area, for 60 seconds. Rinse with warm water and gently pat dry with a clean towel.
Skin Analysis
This step allows us to assess the skin so we can tailor our facial and give the skin what it needs. Feel your skin texture and look at skin coloring, note any redness or uneven tone. Assess pore size, hyperpigmentation, and any significant changes you may be noticing with your skin overall. Make a note of any irritation or sensitivity.
Esthetician Tip: If you want to steam your skin you can do it here, but it’s not essential. It is nice to take a warm, damp washcloth and let it sit over the face for a few minutes to soften the skin and prepare it for a deeper treatment.
Tone and Balance
What You'll Need: Hydrating Toner & Cotton Rounds
The Hydrating Toner features Aloe Vera and botanical Hyaluronic Acid and delivers a rush of soothing hydration as it balances the skin and prepares it for the sheet mask treatment. I prefer to use a cotton round to apply the toner, but you may use your hands if you prefer.
Treatment
What You'll Need: Anti Wrinkle Sheet Mask or Brightening Sheet Mask
Sheet masks deliver a surge of hydration and are a fun way to supercharge your facial routine with targeted skincare ingredients. Because sheet masks sit on the skin for 10-15 minute, the humectants can work to hydrate deeply. I love the Anti Wrinkle Sheet Mask for a spring facial to deliver soothing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits featuring Glycerin, Green Tea, Vitamin E, Rosehip Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, ad Glycolic Acid.
Glycolic Acid not only exfoliates and smooths the look of the skin as it hydrates, but it also diminishes the appearance of dark spots, hyperpigmentation, lines, and wrinkles, and allows your other skincare to penetrate more deeply.
Remove your sheet mask from the package and unfold, being mindful to unfold the nose flap as well. Apply the top of the mask at the hairline and press onto the face working your way downward. Adjust the mask around the eyes, nose, mouth, and jawline. Smooth out any large wrinkles or bubbles if possible and let the mask remain on the skin for 10-15 minutes.
This is a great opportunity to indulge in a facial massage while your sheet mask is working its magic. You can also sit back and enjoy some relaxing music or listen to positive affirmations.
Remove the mask and massage the remaining serum into the skin and onto the neck. You can even apply it to the back of your hands. If your face feels sticky, you can spritz a little water before the next steps. I find that if I move on to the rest of my routine the stickiness resolves.
Serums and Boosters
What You'll Need: 10% Niacinamide Booster
You can amplify the results of your facial with additional serums and boosters.
Note: This part of the routine can additionally help to improve the appearance of dark spots, minimize the look of large pores, pump the look of skin, and balance oil and shine.
The 10% Niacinamide Booster is a favorite of mine in this facial as it can support our skin’s lipid barrier, improves the look of hydration with Pentavitin, additionally targets the look of dark spots, and minimizes the appearance of pores. Press 4-6 drops onto the face and neck.
Eye Care
What You'll Need: Advanced Repair Eye Cream
The thin, delicate skin around the eyes needs extra care, deep hydration, and lightweight moisturization that absorbs thoroughly. The Advanced Repair Eye Cream is luxurious and moisturizing without feeling heavy. It is specially formulated with 5 clinically-tested active ingredients and multiple powerful peptides. These peptides can act as humectants and this unique formulation works to improve the appearance of lines, wrinkles, bags, and dark circles.
Dab on a ½ pea-sized amount and lightly massage around the undereye and above the brow bone in a circular motion to restore and illuminate the look of the eye area.
Esthetician Tip: You can also use your Youth Glow Eye Gel around the lips! It is rich in humectants.
Moisturize
What You'll Need: Glyco-Peptide Anti Wrinkle Moisturizer or Vitamin C Day Moisturizer
Choose the moisturizer that works best with your skin type. This will add a final layer of humectants and lock in the hydration. Use 1-2 pumps and massage gently around the face.
Don’t forget your Tighten and Lift Neck Cream! The skin on the neck is thinner and more delicate and needs hydration and moisturization too. Apply 2 pumps up the center of the neck, down the sides, around the back of the neck, and onto the décolleté. You can apply your moisturizer or neck cream onto the backs of your hand as well.
