Cleansing 101: Esthetician Tips

The daily steps we take to care for our skin are essential in achieving our skin goals. Cleansing is a key component of any skincare routine.

In fact, it is an essential step in starting our skincare routine on the right foot... and with a clean slate! Here are some steps and tips to cleanse your skin properly and effectively.

Pre-Cleanse

A cleanser before my cleanser? A pre-cleanse can kickstart the removal of dirt, pollution, makeup, and excess oil so your cleanser can work on a deeper level and the ingredients can be more effective. This can be a great addition to your evening routine and is known as a double cleanse.

Oils and oil cleansers can easily break down the most stubborn and waterproof makeup products. They nourish delicate dry skin and clarify even oily skin types. Oils also help support our skin's natural lipid barrier. The goPure Rosehip Oil work very well as an oil for pre-cleansing.

How to Use Oils as a Makeup Remover & Pre-Cleanse

Pull any hair away from the face so you can get your products close to the hairline. The goPure Spa Headband is excellent at keeping your hairline dry. Massage the oil onto dry skin and around the the eye area to start the pre-cleanse. Wet the skin with warm water and continue to massage. Use a washcloth or cotton rounds to wipe away the makeup and oils and continue with your cleanser and the rest of your skin care routine.

Micellar water is another option for makeup removal and pre-cleanse. Micellar uses mild surfactants suspended in soft water. They pull away dirt, oil, makeup, and grime while leaving skin feeling hydrated and refreshed, without irritation or leaving a heavy residue. It is important to note that Micellar Water is not intended to replace your cleanser, but remove makeup and impurities before cleansing.

When using the goPure Micellar Makeup Wipes, gently wipe the eye area and face, without scrubbing, tugging or pulling skin. Continue your skincare routine with your cleanser, serums, moisturizer, and SPF for the day.

Esthetician Tip: Not all traditional cleansers are made to remove makeup. Specialized micellar makeup removers and oils can help break down stubborn makeup products gently and effectively.

Cleansing

We want to set our skin up for success day and night and this starts with cleansing. During the day, pollution can amplify the negative effects of free-radicals on the skin that cause the visible signs of aging. At night our skin is in repair and restore mode, but surface bacteria, dirt, makeup, and oil can clog pores and cause breakouts and inflammation.

Cleansing day and night is recommended, however cleansing at night is crucial to remove these impurities from the surface of the skin and is your most important cleanse.

Esthetician Tip: It may also be important to cleanse the skin after sweating heavily.

Skin Fact: Over 100 Billion bacteria live on our skin at any given time. Some are good and contribute to a healthy skin biome while some lead to skin issues like irritation and acne. One bacteria can multiply into 16 million in just 12 hours!

Cleansing helps to remove dirt, bacteria, oil, pollution, free-radicals, and other skin stressors that can lead to clogged and enlarged pores, breakouts, irritation, dehydration, redness, and contribute to premature skin aging. Proper cleansing also prepares the skin to recieve the ingredients in your skin care products. It really is a step no one should skip.

Gentle cleansing is ideal. It is important to choose a cleanser that works with your skin type and is free from SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and harsh surfactants. Harsh cleansing ingredients can strip the skin’s lipid barrier and cause irritation, redness, dryness, and dehydration. After cleansing, your skin shouldn't feel tight, dry, or stingy. It should feel clean and refreshed! The goPure Vitamin C Cleanser is a gentle gel cleanser that is suitable for all skin types and can be used day and night.

How to Cleanse

Use warm water to dampen skin and apply a nickel-sized amount of cleanser to your hands and lather. Use a circular motion, and gentle pressure to massage the product around the face for 60 seconds. This will allow the specialized ingredients to penetrate and work their magic.

Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Esthetician Tip: Avoid cleansing with hot water. Hot water can compromise our skin's barrier leading to dryness, irritation, and dehydration.

If you’re going to use an exfoliating product that is rinsed off the skin, use it as instructed after cleansing. Remember to avoid over-exfoliating by limiting this step to one to three times per week.

Tone

Toner is made is help remove any lingering impurities and residue left over from cleansing. goPure's Hydrating Toner is great as it helps to reduce the appearance of pores while also deeply moisturizing skin. Tone skin using a cotton round or using your hands.

Esthetician Tip: If you’re going to follow cleansing with a humectant-rich product, like the Dramatically Dewy Serum, you can leave the skin slightly damp (but not wet). If you’re going to apply a retinoid product, like the Firm and Lift Serum, directly after cleansing, pat the skin until fully dry.

Now your skin is ready for the rest of your goPure routine! Remember, cleansing is an essential skincare step in any skincare routine. The name of the game is gentle cleansing that removes impurities without stripping or drying the skin.

Would my cleanse routine be different if I have rosacea? I had one anesthetist tell me I needed to skip an astringent.

I’ve been using my argon oil also as a last step after serums and moisturizer at night. Is that ok?
This is all very helpful and I love my GoPure!

This is very helpful. I was always told to wash with very hot water so that the pores open and the dirt comes out. I will stop doing that. I was also always told to rinse off toner because it is an irritant. The gopure hydrating toner is not irritating at all so I have not been rinsing it off. I gather that is correct procedure as well. Thanks for the tips!

Thank you for this. I use my rosehip oil for the Ver last. I read somewhere that it seals the moisturizer into the skin.

I do have a question regarding Vitamin C serum and the Hyaluronic Acid serum. Which one goes on first?

Thank you.

Hello Cheri,

Thank you for reaching out. The Hyaluronic Acid Serum should be applied to moist/damp skin. We would suggest when you apply the Vitamin C Serum allow 30 to 60 seconds for your skin to fully absorb the serum but it shouldn’t dry before applying the Hyaluronic Acid Serum so your face is still a bit damp from the Vitamin C Serum.

Let us know if you have other questions.

Excellent article, thank you for providing. I was using the oil after my serums but now I will use them before cleansing my face. I love the Go Pure system and how my skin feels and looks! Thank you!
