The Difference Between Dry & Dehydrated Skin

Water is the body's primary chemical component and makes up about 50% - 70% of our body weight. Our body depends on water to survive; every cell, tissue, and organ needs water to function properly. This is no different for our skin. Our skin NEEDS water to function and to look and feel its best.

So how can we support our skin and keep it hydrated when we constantly lose water from our body and skin? Boosting hydration can take a well-rounded approach with the fluids we intake, targeted supplements, and our topical skincare routine. Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin

What's the difference between dry & dehydrated skin?

Dry skin is a skin type. It’s a lack of oil in and on the skin.

Dehydrated skin is a temporary skin condition. It’s a lack of water in the skin.

Dry skin can be more prone to dehydration but ALL skin is always losing water. Our skin’s lipid barrier works to keep that water in. As we age, our skin produces less oil and fewer ceramides, a vital skin carrier component, that help keep skin looking and feeling hydrated and supple.

Our skin also has what is called the Natural Moisture Factor (NMF) in the upper layer of the skin and it works to keep our skin properly hydrated. It protects it from damage and helps support our cellular and barrier functions. It’s like our skin’s own natural hydration-boosting serum and it functions to support healthy cell processes.

Fact: When skin loses hydration through the upper layer of the skin (known as the stratum corneum) it’s called Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). Our NMF and the skin’s lipid barrier work to prevent TEWL.

Common Signs of Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin can be dull & rough. The skin will loose plumpness and elasticity, which causes lines and wrinkles to be more visible. Redness, irritation, itchiness, blotchiness, flaky skin, and a darker under-eye area are all possible signs of dehydrated skin.

Skin Hydrators & Humectants

Skin Hydrators and Humectants

Our skincare products and our routine can help support skin hydration, as well as our NMF and Lipid Barrier in keeping the skin looking and feeling properly hydrated.

What is a humectant? These are skincare ingredients that bind to water and attempt to draw in onto or into the skin. They are barrier supportive. Some can even exfoliate as they draw water to the skin to improve the overall look and feel of skin hydration.

Improving skin hydration can improve the appearance of redness, sensitivity, texture, lines, wrinkles, elasticity, skin tone, and texture. Skin looks plumper, more pliable, and is less prone to damage. Overall, hydrated skin looks more youthful.

The Humectant Hero:  Hyaluronic Acid
This humectant is found naturally in the skin and can hold up to 1000x its weight in water. It can be found in different forms in our skincare (hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid). Smaller weights of hyaluronic acid may be able to penetrate the skin more deeply. Hyaluronic acid is easily tolerable, very safe to use, and suitable for all skin types.

Beyond Hyaluronic Acid:  Hydrosella
A hyaluronic acid serum can elevate your routine, day or night. Hydrated skin is more balanced and can better absorb your skincare products. Serums that go beyond using just hyaluronic acid add synergy to the results and level up your skin hydration routine. Our Dramatically Dewy Serum is an antioxidant-rich active botanical treatment that features 3 forms of hyaluronic acid, plus Hydrosella™ and vitamin B5.

• Hydrosella not only supports skin’s hydration deeply, but it supports barrier function and lipid production. It also helps to lock in visible hydration for up to 72 hours.

• When different weights of hyaluronic acid are used together, it creates a synergy. They work together to plump the look of skin more dynamically (hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid).

• Hyaluronic acid serums are best applied on damp skin. Use 4-5 drops and press into the skin, neck, and chest.

Applying a hydration serum isn’t all you need for more hydrated-looking skin. It’s important to lock in added hydration and skin’s moisture with the perfect moisturizer.

Our Glyco-Peptide Anti Wrinkle Moisturizer is packed with barrier-supportive ingredients, effective humectants, skin-firming and soothing peptides, and nourishing (but never heavy) emollients – a moisturization powerhouse that covers all of the bases!

• Deeply hydrates to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

• A peptide-packed proprietary blend of the Dermaxyl® & MATRIXYL® features wrinkle-filling properties and improves the look of the more advanced signs of aging. The peptides and ceramides work together to improve the look of uneven skin tone, sagging skin, and lines and wrinkles. Ceramides create a protective shield that keeps environmental irritants like dirt and pollution out, while keeping moisture in

• Restores vital nutrients and hydration, revealing a more youthful appearance

• Solumoist, a hydrating Tamarind Seed Extract-based formula, has been clinically proven to hydrate better than traditional hyaluronic acid

• Fortified with skin-nourishing vitamins like niacinamide

Supporting skin hydration can keep your skin looking and feeling its best year-round. Remember that using a hydration serum is just part of the picture. Make sure you help lock in that hydration, too.

    Hydrating Skincare Routine

Hydrating Skincare Routine for Dry Skin

goPure products are packed with humectants and can help support our Natural Moisture Factor (NMF) and Lipid Barrier in keeping the skin properly hydrated. Use this skincare routine when your skin needs a boost of hydration.

    Step 1: Cleanse

Use warm water and our Vitamin C Cleanser to start your routine. It is important to  avoid cleansing with hot water and cleaners with SLS and other harsh surfactants; these can strip your skin of its natural oils and weaken the skin’s barrier.

    Step 2: Exfoliate

Stick to gentle exfoliation with our Microdermabrasion Exfoliator. This will allow your other skincare products to absorb deeper, but do not over-exfoliate.

    Step 3: Balance

Use our Hydrating Toner to maintain your skin’s pH and prepare it to get the most out of your skincare routine. It is packed with hydrating humectants and supportive lipids.

Step 4: Treat, Hydrate & Boost

Start with damp skin to get the most out of our hydration boosters. Our Dramatically Dewy Serum is designed to  penetrate the look of skin 3 levels deep and revive the appearance of dry, rough, and dull skin. Plus, it's clinically proven to hydrate the look of skin for up to 72 hours!

Follow with our 10% Niacinamide Booster which offers enhanced barrier support and lasting hydration.

    Step 5: Moisturize

Locking in hydration to the face, eye area, neck, and hands will ensure the skin stays hydrated. Our Anti Wrinkle Moisturizer and Tighten & Lift Neck Cream are perfect moisturizers for this routine.

    Step 6: Protect

Using facial oils to reinforce your skin barrier for even deeper moisturization is a luxurious addition to your PM routine. Our 30% Vitamin C Dry Oil  penetrates deep to support your delicate skin barrier for a supple, healthy look. Don’t forget to get enough sleep each night!

    Step 7: Supplement

CeramaFirm works to boost the look of hydration, visibly improve skin’s elasticity and firmness, and improve the look of skin smoothness.

Take 2 capsules daily or as recommended by a healthcare professional. Be sure to eat a well-balanced diet, and drink your water.
