Stephanie’s Top 5 Skincare Tips
#1 Clean your makeup brushes
… and your phone, regularly. Don't forget to wash that pillowcase!
A single bacteria can turn into 16 MILLION in 12 hours. This can cause breakouts on our skin. The bacteria works to invade our skin barrier, flourish in our pores, and stress our skin. Keep your routine clean, not just with the ingredients in your skincare, but with the things that come into contact with your skin as well.
#2 Take time to layer properly
It is easy to be in a rush to get through our routine. I have been guilty of this myself. Take the time to layer skincare properly and give each product the right amount of time to absorb. This can maximize the benefits, prevent possible irritation, and better ensure the products are penetrating the skin as opposed to sitting on top of the skin.
#3 Consistency over perfection
This brings me to my next point…it’s ok to be perfectly imperfect in our routine. I never want someone to feel like they're doing their skincare wrong. It is best to do what we can do and be consistent. Even if we rush, or skip a step. Even if it is a very basic routine and we forget some of the ‘ideal’ application tips. Consistency will give you the most results over trying to be “perfect” with each step.
#4 Think of skincare as a part of your overall wellness plan
Our skin is our largest organ and it needs (health)care just like the rest of our body and the rest of our organs. We don’t speak about heart health or brain health as some indulgent activity. Why is there so much messaging around skincare that positions it as vanity or frivolity? Skincare is healthcare and it should be prioritized as part of a well-rounded wellness plan.
#5 Be kind to yourself and be patient with your results
Self-love is a major part of skincare. Love your skin! Look in the mirror and say, "I love my skin. My skin is beautiful. My skin is healthy and strong."
Our skin tells a story. One that is probably full of highs and lows, ups and downs, and even some sun exposure. We have to be careful of how we criticize ourselves, our skin, and that story.
Know that skincare results is a journey and a journey takes time. A lot of the changes come in small steps and improvements that are easy to miss daily, but looking back we can really see the benefits of our consistency. It can take 1-3 skincare renewal cycles to see meaningful results and each cycle can take 4-8 weeks, depending on our age. You will be so surprised 6, 12, 18 months, and more down the road.
Kaylie’s Top 5 Skincare Tips
#1 Avoid touching your face and don’t pick at your skin
This is easier said than done, but can be so crucial when dealing with acne or breakout-prone skin. Throw those 3D mirrors away and avoid trying to pop your pimples (or pores, or blackheads, or anything else for that matter). If you feel like picking, pimple patches are a great option. If you have to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean so you are not spreading any bacteria.
#2 Give yourself at-home facial massages
A facial massage is one of my favorite forms of self-care. It not only feels great, but helps with the look of puffiness, boosts circulation, and assists in lymphatic drainage. It can also be that extra boost to your facial routine that you may not know you are missing. You can use your hands, jade rollers, ice rollers, or gua sha tools to do this. I like using all methods depending on how my skin is feeling, but if you don’t have access to facial tools - your hands work just fine! Just make sure you have plenty of “slip,” so that you are not pulling and tugging at your skin. I like to use my Argan Oil for this.
#3 SPF always!
It is no secret that SPF is important when outside at the pool or perhaps on a hot summer day. However, many people don’t realize that SPF is important everyday. UVB rays, otherwise known as the “burning” rays, are typically blocked from windows but more than 50 percent of UVA rays, the main cause of premature skin aging, can penetrate glass. Both UVA and UVB rays contribute to the development of skin cancer, but if you're anywhere close to the window, these UV rays can still reach you. Both UV rays can also penetrate clouds, so even if it is cloudy or gray, you still need to wear your SPF protection.
#4 Avoid over-exfoliating
I have seen this time and time again from clients. Over-exfoliating your skin can lead to irritation, redness, rashes, breakouts, excess dryness, and a disrupted skin barrier. We really don’t need to exfoliate as much as we think we do. If you are new to exfoliation or even an exfoliating pro, stick to 1-3 times a week to ensure you are not causing more harm than good. A good way to avoid over-exfoliating is by cycling your skincare. This means one night for exfoliation, one night for retinol use, and one night for hydration and barrier support.
#5 Adjust your routine based on your skin’s needs
Our skin is constantly changing and sometimes that means our skincare must too. I have been using skincare products long enough to know what my skin needs each time I go to do my routine. If you are not there yet - that is ok! But try it out and see what you think. If you’re feeling more dry and it is supposed to be a night you use retinol, maybe just do another barrier support night instead. If you are feeling like you have more sun damage and hyperpigmentation post summer vacation, then try adding in our Intensive Spot Corrector. Listen to your skin.
