How to Layer Your Skincare Products For Ultimate Results

August 27, 2019 | BY Debra Pivko

I pride myself on being able to tell it like it is and debunk myths when they arise. For example, eating your food in the right order doesn’t make a difference, right? However, layering skincare products on your skin in a certain order is not one of those myths. There is actually a method to the madness. And for good reason…

Why? According to board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Heather Rogers, applying your skin care products in the proper order ensures that your skin receives the full benefits of each product.

So which product goes on top of what?

An easy rule to follow is to apply your products with the thinnest consistency to thickest, or from liquid to oil to cream. Think of it the way you think of getting dressed. You wouldn’t put the thickest clothing on first because it would be harder to get the thinner, tighter clothing on after.

Timing matters too because different products take different times to absorb. Some products say you have to wait anywhere from five to 30 minutes before the next step to ensure proper absorption, but who has time for that? But since most of us are always in a rush, let’s focus on order above timing – because that’s most important.

Your routines will be a bit different from day to night because during the day you’ll want to include sunscreen. The morning routine is all about protection from outside elements so leave treatment type products, like retinol, for nighttime.

Today I’ll go over the daytime routine.

In the morning, wash with a gentle sulfate-free face cleanser. Recommended Cleanser: goPure Vitamin C Cleanser.

Many people choose to skip toners and that’s OK! They were created to help return the skin’s pH after it became too basic from harsh soaps. Face cleansers are now so much better balanced than toners are not a required step. Avoid alcohol-based toners because they contribute to over-drying of the skin by stripping the protective oils and water-based toners are a poor vehicle for getting active ingredients into the skin. Recommended Toner: goPure Hydrating Facial Toner with Witch Hazel, Aloe Vera & Rosehip Oil

Serums are super-concentrated, nutrient-dense formulas that address specific concerns, so it’s best to keep them as close to the skin as possible. We recommend a hydrating antioxidant serum which can provide a variety of benefits—from blunting your skin’s inflammatory response to neutralizing damage from UV rays and environmental pollutants.

At goPure, we developed a lightweight super hydrating eye gel that helps strengthen the delicate skin around the eyes in a formula that’s more easily absorbed, without leaving a soapy or greasy residue. It’s also less likely to bleed into your eyes, which can cause irritation. For best results, consistency is key so use it daily.

Plus, it serves as an incredible base and primer for your concealer and foundation helping your makeup go on smoothly without creasing up! Your friends will compliment you on how youthful and refreshed you look. Just another industry secret!

Yes, everyone needs a moisturizer, even if you have oily skin – and even if you apply hydrating hyaluronic acid serum underneath. “Even though your body has its own natural lubricating system consisting of glands that secrete oil (or sebum) to maintain a protective coating against harsh outside conditions and infections, most of us do need extra hydration after the havoc that sun, weather and harsh chemicals wreak on our skin,” explains board-certified dermatologist Sandra Kopp.

Recommended product: goPure Vitamin C Moisturizer

Sunscreen should be the last step in your daytime skin care routine (before makeup of course and if your makeup doesn’t contain sunscreen already.) We are hoping to launch the perfect sunscreen one day, but just because we don’t have it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear it! And make sure to wear sunglasses during the day too to protect the delicate skin around your eyes.

And there you go! The order to apply your daily products, demystified. Let us know if you have any questions or would also like to know the order for your night time products, too!
