10 Foods That Tighten Skin

September 24, 2019 | BY Stephanie George

Where in the world did this loose skin come from?! This is a question I, as well as many other women at different stages have asked ourselves at least once in our life. Our skin doesn’t just decide that overnight it’s gonna begin sagging, but instead, its lost elasticity over time due to various factors…age, poor diet, losing weight too quickly, even eating sugar and salt play parts in the type of skin you’ll be living in.

Why are both elastin and collagen so important in our lives? We need them to help our skin retain it’s youthful appearance looking supple and full. Without these two you’ll notice skin appears aged with more distinct wrinkles and saggy skin including those extremely hard to fix areas like the infamous jowls. Understanding that change isn’t only found under a scalpel and that what you eat as well as your lifestyle choices play a huge role in the tightness and tone of your skin. Here are 10 foods that tighten skin that we know you’ll love because eating right is the absolute best way to see change so get your grocery lists ready!

This delicious dairy product is not only a great source of calcium, something women especially in menopause and post menopause need in the prevention of osteoporosis but it provides us with live enzymes keeping our digestion normal helping eliminate toxins from our bodies. A clean system = a clean face. Cottage cheese has essential minerals including Selenium that leaves our skin with a smooth and youthful glow as the vitamin A (Retinol) helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while vitamin E helps us fight off free radicals using amino acids to help and produce the production of collagen.

Dried apricots especially are an easy snack to carry around and although tasty, are a powerhouse full of vitamins and essential nutrients including phytochemicals helping you with a younger looking appearance. How do apricots help us slow down the aging process? By stimulating the production of new skin cells, the high amount of B-carotene converts itself to the well know anti-aging vitamin A. Your skin is protected by consuming this powerful food, saving you from the breakdown of collagen from photo damage after being exposed to the sunlight.

With neutralizing effects, this superfood helps keep our skin healthy by fighting off free radicals that although unaware of, we come across throughout the day. When consuming this delicious fruit you’re helping to keep your skin hydrated and supple allowing skin to appear ‘plumper’ disguising the appearance of wrinkles and other age related issues. High in rich antioxidants, eating pomegranates also wake up keratino-cycle (skin) cells stimulating cellular regeneration.

Whether you eat them raw, juiced or have always been curious about eating beets, it’s never too late to start adding more of this highly concentrated powerful antioxidant to your day. Filled with various nutrients including carotenoids, vitamin c and folate, beets have been known to detoxify and provide a anti-inflammatory effect on puffy and inflamed skin leaving the surface to appear smooth and firm. Beets are a popular superfood that Dermatologists including Dr. Mark Rosenberg advise their patients to the many benefits this veggie has to offer. With studies proving the power they have on anti-aging, Dr. Rosenberg explains one major benefit from consistently eating beets is “High levels of folates and antioxidants can decrease the depth and severity of skin wrinkles by 60%!”

Lutein, a carotenoid type of vitamin found in broccoli works similar to a beta-carotene protecting our skin from oxidative damage that is known to create fine lines and wrinkles, while promoting and maintaining the production of collagen from vitamin C, selenium and vitamin A. Protecting from sun damage, Sulforaphane works together with other protective systems as well as neutralizing free radicals that cause your skin to age. With the consumption of broccoli, you are introducing the Suloraphane by minimizing the amount of skin cells that have been destroyed by UV light in a matter of 48 hours up to 29%.

We’ve all heard of beans being the ‘magical’ fruit, but all jokes and popular childish rhymes aside this fiber filled food provides our bodies with many needed nutrients and benefits that really turn them into the magical treat it really is. When we add any form of beans into our diet we are helping in preventing any damage by neutralizing compounds that put your skin at risk. Legumes help by keeping skin healthy without irritation and inflammation with their anti-inflammatory properties leaving skin looking tight and taunt. Another way these beans are able to work towards a more youthful appearance is the fact another essential nutrient found is Biotin. When we are lacking biotin our skin appears dull and dry unable to produce a ‘glow’ but after incorporating Biotin into your diet you will begin to notice once your skin has begun to lock in moisture those signs of aging that have been written on your face aren’t as prominent. Your skin appears much smoother and toned with the improved amount of collagen and elasticity you’ve gotten all from biotin.

Containing a plant compound isoflavones, a study showed that ‘middle aged’ women whom ate soy daily for 8 to 12 weeks found their skin’s elasticity visibly improved as well as the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. With phytochemicals, soy is another food that helps fight off free radicals from prematurely aging your skin and with other anti-aging components aim to stimulate the fullness of elasticity and collagen. Your skin starts to become less blotchy, smoother and the texture and tone will improve and look more taunt than it was before. Soy is a great food to add to your diet to not only visibly improve the look of your skin but it also protects from UV radiation that can damage the cells inside our body and can be found in tofu, soybeans and even soy milk!

Another portable snack that not only can be carried around in a zip lock bag for easy access and can easily be added to dishes to not only taste great but to also reap the benefits. Packed with healthy, nourishing fats, skin is left soothed and moisturized with reduced inflammation and a smoother texture. Adding this omega 3 packed snack to your diet helps in maintaining healthy skin by protecting it from the sun’s harmful rays while locking in moisture and needed nutrients. With a high vitamin E content, many of us will begin noticing the appearance of mild to moderate dark eye circles that cause a even more tired look will become noticeably lighter waking up those sleepy looking eyes. Those that worry about the amount of fat walnuts carry should relax as this powerful nut has the good monounsaturated fats and not the saturated fats that we should steer clear from. Another added bonus, research has shown that about 20% of the calories in various nuts are not even absorbed making this a delicious alternative for a go to snack!

A veggie that is closely related to Kale another powerhouse, brussel sprouts are packed with high levels of antioxidants and nutrients including vitamin C. A great source of omega 3 fatty acids that work in leaving skin with a younger, healthier glow. According to the National Institute of Health, a study showed that when subjects were to eat to cups of brussel sprouts daily, the damage from oxidative stress to their cells was reduced by 28%! Whether you like your brussel sprouts soft or crispy, just remember don’t overcook these delicious leafy vegetables as their higher level of sulforaphane gives an awful smell of rotten eggs that can spread quickly in your kitchen…(or so I heard!)

Or any citrus fruit is packed with a high amount of vitamin C which assist lysine by allowing the production of collagen to form creating supple looking skin. When skin appears full and supple with the daily intake of citrus fruits, those with loose skin or those just beginning to notice a difference in the elasticity of their skin will see a difference as plumped skin results in a tighter appearance. An added bonus with tangerines? Each tangerine comes with selenium and zinc, both helping in creating elasticity. Whether you drink fresh squeezed orange juice daily or eat a delicious citrusy fruit you’re slowing down the aging process winning the fight against free radicals. With an orange a day you’re keeping premature aging at bay!

Getting rid of or at least minimizing loose skin isn’t an overnight fix. It took more than a day to happen and it’ll take more than a day to repair. Incorporating these and many other healthy foods into your diet will payoff in the long run even seeing results in as little as a few weeks. Adding protein packed foods and those loaded with antioxidants to your meals will point you in the right direction. Following your healthy meal plan, create a skincare routine that can not only be completed daily but can be followed. We’re not in our 20’s anymore and unfortunately our skin may not look as young as we feel, but we can still take preventative measures by simply slowing down the hands of time by living a healthier lifestyle and eating foods that not only taste good but that benefit our skin and the way we age.
